Training and Curriculum Program Specialists

The Training and Curriculum/Programming Specialists (TAC/PS) serve as the professional child & youth development education consultants for Child and Youth Services (CYS) staff. They oversee all elements of CYS developmental programming activities to include the environment, equipment and materials, program structure, activities and experiences, supportive mentoring and interactions and positive social experiences. TAC/PS are responsible for conducting training for all CYS direct care and administrative staff. Training topics include child & youth growth and development, health and nutrition, developmental programming, discipline & guidance techniques, parent relations, family style dinning, child abuse identification, reporting and prevention, and safety, etc.

Staff Training Requirements

A total of 38 hours of training are required for direct care staff to reach their target level of training. Once target level training is completed, 24 hours of in-service training are required annually.

*Initial training is an orientation training which includes 16 hours of supervised work experience. All staff are required to complete this training prior to being solely responsible for assigned children and starting Foundation Level Training. Foundation Level Training consist of 3 levels of training; Entry, Skills, and Target.

*Entry level training is completed within the first 6 months of employment to include communicable diseases, standard first aid, CPR, child abuse and neglect identification. Also included are 3 credits each of competency based Department of Defense (DoD) Training Module Series of Caring for Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers, School-age, or Middle School & Teen children & youth (caregiver picks one age group module and related topics).

*Skill level training is completed within 12 months of hire to include 4 additional competencies based DoD Training Modules, child abuse and neglect prevention, observations of programs, classroom environment assessment, special projects and they must complete additional assigned trainings by TAC/PS.

*Target level training is completed within 18 months of hire to include 6 additional competencies based DoD Training Modules, CPR & SFA updates, Measuring Qualities, and completion of additional assigned training by TAC/PS.

Opportunities for Child and Youth Services Program Assistants (CYPA) and other direct care staff to obtain the nationally recognized Child Development Associate (CDA) and the Army School-Age (ASA) credentials are available. A Youth Practicum (YP) is currently available for Middle School & Teen staff until a formal Youth Credential is available. 34 staff have earned CDAs and 1 staff member has earned the ASA credential in Fort Beloir Child and Youth Services programs.
