PROGRAM INFORMATION

Kawamura Community Center

How Did We Get Our Name?

The Kawamura Arts & Crafts Center is named in honor of Corporal Terry T. Kawamura. On 20 March 1969, his unit was defending against close enemy attack in Vietnam. During the battle, Corporal Kawamura hurled his body onto an explosive charge thrown by the enemy, in order to save the lives of two comrades in the 173rd Engineer Company. For this action, Corporal Kawamura was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by the President in the name of The Congress. Years later, the Kawamura Community Arts & Crafts Center was named in his honor.

Terry Kawamura entered the US Army from Hawaii on 27 September 1967. After completing basic training, he received Engineer Advanced Individual Training (AIT) and Airborne Training. Following a short tour of duty with the 82nd Airborne Division in August 1968, he was assigned to the 173rd Engineering Company, 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam.

Corporal Kawamura, was born, on 10 December 1949, in Washiawa, Ohu, Hawaii. Terry Kawamura entered the US Army before his 18th birthday and died before his 20th birthday.

Arts & Crafts Instructors

MWR is Looking for Arts and Crafts Instructors

The Kawamura Arts & Crafts Center is constantly on the look-out for artists and crafts people who are willing to share their craft by teaching a class. If you can teach painting; (watercolor, oil or acrylic), drawing; (pencil, charcoal or ink), origami, scrap booking, floral arranging, glass etching, digital photography, graphic art or photo software programs, you could be one of our future instructors. We also need instructors in sewing, knitting, crochet, needlepoint and other crafts. It's not necessary to have taught class formally or be certified. It is necessary to has a passion for your art, and know your craft well enough to teach it, informally to a small group. The objective is to leave the class satisfied with a new skill and a finished piece of art or craft. If your particular art or craft is not mentioned above, but you believe it may be a class people would also enjoy, call us and let us know. For more information call 703-806-4647. Click for flyer.
